If the convenience of having one type of oil in your garage out weighs your patriotic obligation to take good care of your bike, you should consider selling your Harley so you can buy a Toyota Preus. 20W50 works OK in the engine but is way too thin to be effective in the transmission and primary under cold and hot operating conditions. Like most things in life, the trade for this convenience is compromise. SYN 3 is convenient in that only one oil type need be used in the engine and drivetrain.
HARLEY EVO TRANSMISSION OIL CHANGE FULL
SYN 3 is a 20W50 multi-use full synthetic oil that can be used in the transmission, primary, and the engine according to the Factory. Q: Do you recommend the new Harley SYN 3 oil?Ī: No. Although we recommend using Dexron III ATF with our King Kong Clutch due to the added friction modifiers found in the Automatic Transmission Fluid. Q: What kind of oil should I use in my primary?Ī: BAKER recommends Spectro Heavy Duty Primary Chaincase Fluid (85W) for all 1980-up stock clutches and mild performance aftermarket clutches. If Spectro cannot be found, use a gearbox grade oil or in a worst case scenario, differential (85W90) fluid. Q: What kind of oil should I use in my Transmission?Ī: BAKER recommends Spectro Heavy Duty Platinum 6 Speed Transmission Fluid (75W140) for all factory and BAKER 4, 5, 6 and 7-speed applications. The fluid level should be at the bottom of the derby cover opening. Lubricants meeting the requirements of API MT-1 service provide protection against the combination of thermal degradation, component wear, and oil-seal deterioration, which is not provided by lubricants in current use meeting only the requirements of API GL-1, 4, or 5.If you check the fluid level in the primary, do so with the bike held upright off of the jiffy stand.
HARLEY EVO TRANSMISSION OIL CHANGE MANUAL
"The designation API MT-1 denotes lubricants intended for non-synchronized manual transmissions used in buses and heavy-duty trucks. Since then there are more options but you still have those two options.

Harley used to market 2 products, one for the transmission and the primary and one for engine oil. Speculation says Harley is GL1 possibly up to G元ġ. Lubricants meeting the requirements of API MT-1 service provide protection against the combination of thermal degradation, component wear, and oil-seal deterioration, which is not provided by lubricants in current use meeting only the requirements of API GL-1, 4, or 5." If not I think its a bit of a wild card but doubt it would hurt the transmission even if its not the purpose that Mobil states. If he wants to do what is best for the bike in my opinion is just use the called for lubricant which is still Harley Davidson Transmission and Primary Lubricant. Its an unknown if it would damage the clutch. I would never use it in the primary though.

Good question and one that I doubt you will ever get an educated answer on other than if you want to try it, it MAY do no harm.
